Finding Academic Articles

Academic Articles

The Extended Essay

  • the topic selection process involves choosing a field in psychology, narrowing it to a specific topic, and developing a research question

  • your argument should be supported by research gathered from academic sources

  • topics in "pop psychology" or "self-help" may not be appropriate if they are not supported by peer-reviewed research

  • ensure that enough relevant resources are available for your topic at the start of the research process

  • use secondary sources only, as the collection of primary data is not allowed

  • evaluate the research you cite (e.g. context and possible biases) and present a balanced argument

  • give consideration given to cultural, ethical, gender, and methodological perspectives

Academic Articles: An example

The number of times an article has been cited is an indication of how influential it is. How many times has this article been cited?

APA vs MLA

When you are doing your research, you will see that many articles written in the discipline of psychology use the APA (American Psychological Association) style. At VSA we use MLA, don't confuse the two! If you study psychology at university, you will probably use APA as your citation style.
